Malta's capital is full of sites sure to satisfy any visitor. Ascend Upper Barrakka Gardens and peer over the edge of its upper level to look out across a cannon-lined promenade standing to attention. Other highlights hidden throughout the city include St John’s Co-Cathedral, which is home to one of Caravaggio’s most famous artworks, and Fort St. Elmo, which affords views of the entire island.

The Blue Lagoon is one of the finest examples of the Maltese archipelago’s natural beauty. Not to be confused with the Blue Grotto, the lagoon squats quietly on Comino, obscured by the surrounding islands of Malta and Gozo. Its pearly-white sands are flanked by rugged cliff faces on one side and a patchwork of shimmering blue hues on the other. These mesmerising waters leave nothing to the imagination, making them ideal for even the most amateur snorkeller.

Malta’s favourite street food, pastizzi, is a flaky, diamond-shaped pastry delight usually stuffed with mushy peas or ricotta. And to find the best pastizzi in Malta, just follow your nose and head towards Merchants Street. Lampuki pie is another of the more traditional dishes on offer here, offering a nod to British tastes in the form of a pie dotted with Arabic flavours such as mint and raisins, topped off with olives and capers for an Italian flair.
