Norway’s North Cape
Jeffrey Heys | October 16, 2013 | Princess Cruises | Caribbean Princess
We had an excellent cruise with quality destinations and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys leaving the ship to explore the ports of call. We purchased just two excursions (i) to the North Cape which would be difficult to undertake independently, and (ii) the train journey from Flaam which is impossible to undertake independently as the ship buys ALL the available train seats for the whole day!! Both excursions were excellent in every respect and, although not cheap, we would urge anyone to consider them seriously.
Otherwise we were happy just to wander into town with our cameras and explore. We were very fortunate to have clear weather and chose to take the cable cars where available, or to take a short (3/4 miles) walk along the fjords for excellent views. Bear in mind that the sights are low-key but, hey!, anywhere is interesting if it’s your first visit.
Our single gripe was the size of the ship. The Caribbean Princess holds 3000 passengers and was way too large for the itinerary. Cool weather meant that everyone dined indoors making it difficult to find a table, and the small ports weren’t geared-up for sudden large influxes of people so we spent longer-than-usual in queues on board waiting to disembark. If you can find a smaller ship with the same itinerary my advice would be to take it.
