Great cruise made better by fantastic staff
Tony H | March 11, 2017 | Princess Cruises | Diamond Princess
We flew to Tokyo for a pre-cruise stay of 3 nights, prior to embarkation at Yokohama port. All arrangements made via Bolsover, including private transfers which were super efficient.
Yokohama port appears a bit chaotic at first glance, but there is an army of helpers to help whisk you through and we were on-board within 20 minutes.
Diamond Princess is broadly similar to the likes of Grand and Crown Princess that we have sailed on in the past, but has been tailored to the Japanese/Far East market in terms of food choices and features lije a Japanese style bathhouse. Food was generally excellent, but a downside of the passenger mix was some quite lacklustre entertainment, I assume due to constraints in trying to cater to all needs e.g. no comedians or anything involving much in the way dialogue.
The ports of call around Japan were varied, with efficient shuttles and well run excursions. We had to divert from Toyama due to an approaching typhoon, but the captain got us an extra day in South Korea – it was disappointing but well managed and we were kept well informed.
Diamond Princess itself is in good condition, but the standout for us was the crew. In 20 plus cruises with most of the major cruise lines, we have never had such brilliant service. The crew were, without exception, just wonderfully helpful and friendly. My family were in tears saying goodbye to our dining room team, who went above and beyond in helping our daughter with her special dietary requirements.
Japan itself was fascinating and Diamond Princess proved to be a great way to get around a good variety of locations, allowing us to see both busy cities and some beautiful scenery. We had a great time and hope to go back on another cruise in a year or two. The ship runs several different itineraries over the course of a year.
