Royal Princess – a Let Down
Alan Dennis | August 22, 2014 | Princess Cruises | Royal Princess
We have just returned from 11 days cruising in the Caribbean on this ship and, frankly, could not wait to get off at Fort Lauderdale and go home. Bolsover has been booking our cruises since about 1997, and we have sailed with Princess 17 times. So, what’s wrong with the Royal Princess? The ship must rank among the best marine architecture in the world; it is a magnificent structure, but that is about where it ends. The ship had 3,500 passengers, was excessively crowded and we resented being herded around. Particularly, we could not get off the ship at our beloved Princess Cays because the queue for tenders was too long. Queuing started at 7. 00 am and did not end until 1,00 pm. Some people who ‘stuck it out’ said they had to queue for 2 hours on shore to get back. We even witnessed people shouting at the crew behind the pursers’s desk because they could not get off the ship. Food in the restaurants was poor, so much so the restaurants were half empty. The worst thing about the ship was ‘NOISE’. Sound reproduction in all the public areas was excessive, including the theatre, Vista lounge, central atrium and open decks. We always had to leave the decks and go to our suite balcony for some peace. Suite balconies are chronically small. Staff service was excellent. We love Princess and will continue to sail with them but not on this ship or the new sister ship to Royal Princess, Regal Princess, that is in build and due to launch in 2014..
