The Caribbean with Ruby Princess
Richard Pumridge | December 29, 2015 | Princess Cruises | Ruby Princess
One of the best parts of this experience was the way the agent (Bolsover Cruise Club) found the right cruise for us based on an understanding of what we were looking for as part of a one-month tour (planned by us) of Florida. We have very little experience in this field, apart from river cruises in Europe and a Southampton-New York-Sothampton crossing with Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 (which we loved). I have to say that we loved the boat and the general cruise experience. The balcony room was good (about the same as the QM2), the entertainment excellent and the staff were totally committed to making sure we had a good time. I have perhaps two criticisms. First, while the food was varied, very good and plentiful, it wasn’t up to the “fine dining” experience of the QM2 (more at the level of a good river cruise). Second, the destinations were a big disappointment. This was not entirely Princess’ fault, except for the first one, which was Princess’ own beach resort and which was ruined by the number of people they cram onto the beach. We had reserved a “clam shell” for two but found that we were stuck behind three other rows of clamshells, as a result of which we couldn’t see the sea – just clamshells! The other resorts have just been ruined by the number of cruise ship passengers who turn up on their shores every day (thousands!). As a result, any charm they may have had has been lost and they have just become identical shopping and eating experiences. In all cases, we just took a quick look and then hurried back to the ship to take advantage of the fact that most of the passengers had gone. If we wanted to cruise again, we would certainly go back to Bolsover (great service) but probably try and find something were we could visit destinations that have retained their individuality.
