Mediterranean cruise on Azura

We sailed with P&O Cruises on board Azura.
We have been on Azura many times as we love the destinations she sails to from Valetta for the Mediterranean and Tenerife to the Canary Islands. I have to say the ship is looking rather dated and dark these days. The dining rooms In particular are very dark in places. Cabins need upgrading. Overall a good cruise with some lovely destinations. However on this cruise we had two new ports. Catania in Sicily is not nice at all in the town where we docked. Certainly not up to description given. Other than stunning views of Mount Etna from the ship. Totally unsuitable for passengers with wheelchairs, mobility scooters, prams or anyone with walking difficulties. The pavements are very uneven, and were blocked by pallets of rubbish, scooters and cars that parked on the pavement meaning you had no option but to walk in to the busy road. It was dirty, run down, lots of graffiti and dog mess. We walked in to town that took around about 25 minutes and turned round and went back to the ship. Many passengers were already on their way back and told us it was not worth going. I would definitely recommend doing a ships tour if this is on your itinerary.We also went to La Seyne sur Mer. Again not a lot there. It was a Sunday so shops were closed. It is a good 20-30 minute walk in to town. .it was once a thriving shipbuilding area but unfortunately now the warehouses are derelict. There was a park just outside the port. There is a ferry to Toulon on the quayside opposite the ship. Tickets can be purchased for €10 pp return trip.
We did 2 really good ship’s tours, one to Rapallo and Porto Fino which as really lovely. We also did a Cavtat and Dubrovnik trip. Once back to Dubrovnik we opted to stay longer and caught the shuttle bus back. We have been to Dubrovnik many times but still enjoy visiting there.
We did have a few issues with the food this time. It was the same menu selections we had on Iona for the 35 night cruise in January. No complaints at all on Iona the food was cooked to perfection, hot, and you got what you had ordered. On Azura the presentation, and cooking of the food not so great. Overcooked fish, tasteless desserts and often nothing like the menu stated. Obviously it is down to the chef on the day.
We have booked again to go on Azura at the end of the year for all her faults it is the destinations we like and they are fly cruises. Hopefully from feedback things will be back to a good standard again by then.
