We were in a cabin on the “main deck” and periodically (annoyingly at 5am onwards) there was a screeching noise which seemed to come from either just inside the cabin or just outside in the corridor.
The din was loud enough to wake me up The chamber made was baffled when I asked her if she had heard it and as no one else seemed bothered I tried to put it out of my mind.
When I booked the cruise (our 6th with Viking) there were only two cabins left and I chose the one furthest away from the engines and therefore it seemed pointless approaching Reception.
However, into day 4 I found an engineer and mentioned the noise.
“Motorised valve” he said “allowing water to move between tanks”.
This would explain why the first screech was followed 15 seconds later by another but he didn’t offer to look at the valve to reduce the noise.
So, with typical British stoicism, I put up with the din.
When checking out I mentioned the noisy valve and was asked why I had not reported it as THERE WERE CABINS WE COULD HAVE BEEN MOVED TO! Darn it!! So, the staff were excellent as usual.
The ship was (generally) superb – perhaps limit the numbers visiting the control room – we had about 15 and this prevented several from seeing the instrumentation.
Included tours all seemed to be much of a muchness and 200 Euros for the Camargue trip was frightening.
Finally, 12 hours from alarm (to get the luggage out) to arriving home when flying time was about 2 hrs (two flights) was a killer.
Perhaps at 80 years old, we are two old for this job!
