When people think of Celebrity Cruises, words like luxury, exceptional dining and outstanding service often come to mind. But after sailing aboard Celebrity Equinox on a Spain, Portugal and Morocco itinerary, I discovered there’s much more to the experience than beautiful surroundings and attentive service.
From memorable food experiences both on board and ashore to one unexpected destination that completely stole the show, this was a cruise that continually exceeded my expectations.

First Impressions: Relaxed Luxury Done Right
The holiday got off to the perfect start with an incredibly smooth embarkation process. Before long, I was on board Celebrity Equinox and immediately struck by how relaxed everything felt.
One of the first things I noticed was the number of comfortable places to sit. Whether I wanted to soak up the sunshine around the pool or escape to a shaded corner with a drink, there always seemed to be somewhere peaceful to unwind.
It struck the perfect balance between luxury and comfort. Nothing felt overly formal or intimidating – instead, there was an effortless elegance that made it easy to settle into holiday mode.
One thoughtful touch summed up Celebrity Cruises perfectly. Returning from warm afternoons exploring ashore, crew members greeted guests with refreshing ice-cold towels. It was a simple gesture, but one that made a surprisingly big difference after a day sightseeing.
What impressed me just as much was the service throughout the voyage. Our cabin steward made every request feel important, while our waiter in the Main Dining Restaurant quickly remembered our favourite dishes and began recommending meals based on what we’d enjoyed the evening before. Rather than simply delivering excellent service, it genuinely felt as though the crew were invested in making our holiday memorable.
Porto Was the Unexpected Star
Every itinerary has a surprise, and for me it was Leixões, the gateway to Porto.
I’ll admit I hadn’t given it much thought before travelling, but it quickly became my favourite destination of the cruise. Walking along Porto’s colourful riverside beside the Douro River was unforgettable, while sampling local favourites such as Pastéis de Nata and the famous Bifana sandwich made me fall in love with the city even more.
The food markets in Porto, Lisbon and Cádiz were another highlight and made this itinerary a dream for anyone who enjoys discovering destinations through local cuisine.
One experience I’d recommend to every guest is a sunset sail in Lisbon. Seeing the city’s famous riverside landmarks from the water offers a completely different perspective and is a wonderful reminder that travelling by sea lets you experience destinations in unique ways.

Food That Goes Beyond Expectations
Dining was undoubtedly one of the biggest highlights of the cruise.
While the Main Dining Restaurant was consistently excellent, Sushi on Five completely exceeded my expectations. The quality, presentation and authenticity rivalled some of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve visited on land.
Celebrity also did a fantastic job of bringing each destination on board. The Oceanview Café buffet regularly reflected where we had been that day, even serving local sweets and treats sourced in Tangier. It was a lovely touch that extended the destination experience long after returning to the ship.
Hidden Gems and Memorable Moments
Every ship has those quieter spaces that become favourites, and for me it was the library. Filled with natural light and comfortable seating, it offered the perfect place to relax with a book or simply watch the sea drift by.
Another unforgettable moment came before arriving into Lisbon, when a small group of UK and Canadian guests were invited onto the helipad for a morning mimosa as we sailed beneath the city’s iconic bridges. It was an incredible way to arrive in port and one of those unexpected experiences that made the cruise feel truly special.
The evening entertainment also deserves a mention. The game shows quickly became part of our nightly routine, while the well-spaced sea days provided the perfect opportunity to recharge between busy days ashore.
Would I Recommend Celebrity Equinox?
Without hesitation.
Celebrity Equinox is ideal for couples looking for a touch of luxury and for food lovers who enjoy experiencing destinations through their cuisine. What impressed me most was that the luxury never felt excessive or intimidating – it simply made everything feel effortless.

For me, it was the combination of exceptional service, destination-inspired dining and a thoughtfully planned itinerary that made this one of the most memorable cruises I’ve ever taken.
