Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas is coming to Southampton in summer 2027, bringing its popular combination of family attractions, entertainment and dining to British cruisers without the need to fly.

The arrival follows Independence of the Seas in 2025 and Liberty of the Seas in 2026, meaning all three Freedom Class ships will have offered Southampton departures over three consecutive summers.

So, what can you expect from Freedom of the Seas, where will it sail, and how does it compare with some of Royal Caribbean’s newer ships?

Freedom of the Seas: Key Facts

Freedom of the Seas entered service in 2006 and underwent a major refurbishment as part of the Royal Caribbean Royal Amplified programme in 2020.

At approximately 156,000 gross tonnes and 339 metres long, it accommodates around 3,926 guests at double occupancy, rising to approximately 4,635 at maximum capacity.

Although it celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2026, the refurbishment introduced several attractions and updated public spaces, giving the ship a combination of established favourites and more recent additions.

Where Will Freedom of the Seas Sail from Southampton?

Freedom of the Seas will offer a varied programme of European cruises during summer 2027, with shorter getaways and longer holidays available.

The announced itineraries include visits to Northern European destinations such as Hamburg, Zeebrugge for Bruges and Le Havre for Paris, alongside cruises exploring Spain, Portugal and the Norwegian Fjords. Baltic itineraries are also planned.

For British cruisers, the Southampton departure is a considerable advantage. You can travel directly to the port by car, coach or train, avoiding airports and airline baggage restrictions altogether.

It’s particularly convenient for families travelling with children or anyone who prefers to begin their holiday closer to home.

What’s On Board Freedom of the Seas?

There’s plenty to keep guests occupied, with a strong emphasis on activities and entertainment.

The Perfect Storm waterslides and FlowRider surf simulator are among the standout attractions, while the rock-climbing wall, mini-golf and ice-skating rink in Studio B offer even more ways to spend your time. Younger guests also have Splashaway Bay, a colourful water play area.

At the heart of the ship is the Royal Promenade, an indoor boulevard lined with shops, bars and cafes. It’s a lively social space and one of Royal Caribbean’s most recognisable features.

For quieter moments, the adults-only Solarium provides somewhere to relax away from the main family activities.

Dining options include the main dining room and Windjammer buffet, alongside speciality restaurants such as Chops Grille, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Izumi. The main dining room and buffet meals are included in the cruise fare, while speciality restaurants carry an additional charge.

What Are the Cabins Like?

Freedom of the Seas offers Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite accommodation, with options to suit different budgets and preferences.

One interesting feature is its Promenade-view Interior staterooms, which overlook the Royal Promenade rather than the sea. These can be appealing if you enjoy watching the activity below, although it’s worth considering the potential for noise from the surrounding public areas.

The ship’s size also makes cabin location important. If you prefer somewhere quieter, consider accommodation away from busy entertainment venues and lifts.

You can check the latest cabin locations using Royal Caribbean’s official Freedom of the Seas deck plans.

How Does Freedom of the Seas Compare with Other Royal Caribbean Ships?

Freedom of the Seas is considerably smaller than Royal Caribbean’s Oasis and Icon Class ships, although it still offers an extensive range of facilities.

While the newer ships have introduced multiple neighbourhoods, larger waterparks and increasingly elaborate attractions, Freedom of the Seas provides many of Royal Caribbean’s signature experiences on a more manageable scale.

For guests accustomed to P&O Cruises, the atmosphere is likely to feel different. Royal Caribbean places considerable emphasis on activities and family entertainment, with an American-style approach to dining and onboard experiences.

It’s worth remembering that Freedom of the Seas is an older ship, despite its refurbishment. If the latest accommodation and facilities are your priority, one of Royal Caribbean’s newer ships may be a better fit.

Freedom of the Seas FAQs

How Old is Freedom of the Seas?

Freedom of the Seas entered service in 2006, making it 21 years old during its 2027 Southampton season. However, it underwent a major refurbishment in 2020 as part of Royal Caribbean’s Royal Amplified programme.

How Many Passengers Does Freedom of the Seas Hold?

Freedom of the Seas accommodates approximately 3,926 passengers at double occupancy, increasing to around 4,635 guests when sailing at maximum capacity.

Is Freedom of the Seas Good for Families?

Yes. With waterslides, a surf simulator, an ice-skating rink, children’s splash areas and plenty of entertainment, Freedom of the Seas is particularly well suited to families.

What Should I Know Before Booking Freedom of the Seas?

Consider the ship’s lively, family-friendly atmosphere and where your cabin is located. Promenade-view staterooms overlook a busy indoor boulevard, while cabins near entertainment venues may experience more noise. It’s also worth comparing the different itinerary lengths and departure dates.

Planning Your Freedom of the Seas Cruise

Freedom of the Seas is a particularly good option for families, couples and first-time Royal Caribbean guests who want plenty to do without choosing one of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Its Southampton departure makes it even more appealing, especially for those who prefer a no-fly holiday.

However, guests looking for a smaller, quieter ship may prefer a different option, particularly during school holidays when the family facilities are likely to be busy.
