TRICK OR TREAT?

What to Wear and Pack for a Luxury Yacht Cruise

Your cruise is booked, the suite is chosen, and the countdown has begun. Then the dress code arrives, and you start wondering whether you’ll need a dinner jacket. Knowing what to wear on a luxury cruise is more straightforward than the terminology suggests, and most luxury lines are more relaxed today than their reputation implies.

It’s one of the most common concerns our Cruise Experts hear before departure, and they typically advise keeping it simple. That usually means packing a little less, but it also helps to know what the dress code actually asks for before the suitcase comes out.

What Is the Dress Code on Luxury Cruise Liners?

Daytime dress is generally relaxed. From 6pm, many luxury lines shift to a more polished evening dress code, though terminology and formality vary. Depending on the line, this may mean collared shirts and trousers for men and dresses or smart separates for women, with jackets either optional or required on certain evenings. What the dress code is on formal nights on luxury cruise liners varies more from line to line. Some hold formal or formal-optional evenings depending on the length of your voyage, while others have none at all.

If you’ve sailed with a mainstream cruise line before, the biggest difference is the everyday standard. Larger mainstream ships tend to keep evenings casual in buffets and pool bars, then set aside one or two nights a week for dressing up. On luxury cruises, guests dress a little more smartly every evening, while formal nights are fewer and usually optional.

What Do the Dress Code Terms Mean?

Each cruise line has its own wording, but most terms fall into four broad categories.

TermWhat it means in practice
Resort casualLinen, polos, shorts and sundresses; swimwear stays by the pool
Smart or country club casualChinos or skirts with a collared shirt or blouse; no shorts or T-shirts at dinner
Elegant casualTrousers and a collared shirt, jacket optional; a dress, skirt or tailored trousers with a blouse. Some lines now welcome refined denim
Formal optionalDark suit or dinner jacket; cocktail dress or gown. Elegant casual remains acceptable

What Does a Yacht Formal Dress Code Mean?

A yacht formal dress code is black tie adapted for warm evenings at sea. Where that dress code applies, a dark suit or lightweight dinner jacket works well for men, while women might choose a fluid cocktail dress, a gown or an elegant trouser suit. For warm-weather cruising, lighter fabrics can make formal dressing more comfortable. Breathable materials keep you cool on balmy nights as you move between the open deck and the dining room. Also look for pieces that resist creasing, so your outfit stays neat and polished from cocktails through dessert.

What to Wear on a Yacht Cruise, Occasion by Occasion

Daytime and Excursions

Days onboard are easygoing, so linen shirts, cotton dresses and tailored shorts are ideal. Pack a kaftan or cover-up for indoor spaces, two or three swimsuits, a wide-brimmed hat and polarised sunglasses. Ashore, what to wear depends on the port, though closed shoes and breathable layers suit most days out on a yacht cruise. If your ship uses tenders to reach the shore, a small dry bag in your tote will keep your phone and documents safe.

Sunset and Cocktail Hour

As the evening approaches, guests start to dress for dinner. Silk or an unlined blazer works well, while a fine-knit jumper or light jacket is useful when temperatures drop after sunset.

Formal Evenings

If your cruise line holds formal nights, this is the time to bring out your favourite dress or darkest suit.

Selections for Women

A midi or maxi dress will see you through most evenings and folds flat in a case. Wide-leg trousers with a blouse or a well-cut jumpsuit work just as well for cocktails. For a yacht formal evening, a floor-length gown in a fluid fabric meets the dress code without adding weight to your luggage. Keep jewellery to a few favourite pieces, add a small clutch and pack a generous wrap for air-conditioned dining rooms and breezy decks. Block heels, wedges and embellished flats are steadier on a moving deck than stilettos.

Refined Choices for Men

A blazer is the most useful piece you can pack. Choose a stylish navy, stone or mid-grey colour, ideally in a softer, unstructured cut for warm weather. When the dress code is yacht formal, a dark suit or dinner jacket is a reliable choice. Whether a tie is expected depends on the cruise line and the specific evening, so check the requirements before you travel.

How Do Dress Codes Differ Between Luxury Yacht Cruise Lines?

Each yacht line handles evenings a little differently. None of the lines below holds traditional formal nights. Even so, guests tend to dress a little more smartly at dinner than they would on a larger ship.

Here’s what to expect from a luxury yacht cruise.

LineEvenings
Ritz-Carlton Yacht CollectionYacht casual by day, yacht sophisticated at dinner; collared shirts recommended but not required. No shorts, caps or flip-flops at dinner
Four Seasons YachtsResort casual by day, with an elegant resort feel in the evening
Aman at Sea
(From 2027)
Yacht casual; suits, ties, tuxedos and evening gowns aren’t required, but shorts aren’t permitted at dinner
Emerald Yacht CruisesCasual by day, smart casual at dinner, such as a collared shirt and trousers, or a dress, skirt or trousers with a blouse

Footwear and the Unwritten Rules of Yacht Etiquette

Decks can become wet, so plan your shoes carefully when deciding what to wear on a yacht cruise. Shoes with good grip and a secure fit are essential during the day, and espadrilles, deck shoes, and low-profile trainers all qualify. In the evening, avoid slim heels, which can catch between deck boards.

How Do I Pack a Versatile Yacht Cruise Wardrobe?

Start with a neutral base of navy, white, stone and black, then add two or three accent pieces that work with all of it. Deciding what to wear each day becomes much easier when you can wear every item more than once over a week on a luxury cruise.

For example, a silk shirt goes with shorts by day and tailored trousers at night, while a navy blazer works over a polo at lunch and a crisp shirt at dinner. Light layers let the same pieces carry you between warmer and cooler ports. Many ships also offer onboard laundry services, so you don’t need to pack a fresh outfit for every day of your cruise.

What Should I Leave at Home?

  • Rigid hard-shell cases, as soft-sided luggage stores more easily
  • A heavy tuxedo, unless your cruise line holds formal nights
  • Stilettos and anything with a hard, slippery sole
  • Distressed denim, baseball caps and flip-flops for evenings
  • Camouflage print, which is illegal for civilians in Barbados and St. Lucia

How Can I Check the Dress Code for My Cruise?

Dress codes can change over time, so it’s always worth checking the latest guidance before you pack. Your boarding documents will list the evenings ahead, so plan accordingly.
