Shore excursions are a key element of the cruise experience, offering guests opportunities to engage with local traditions, cuisines and cultures. Ahead of your cruise, you may be wondering what shore excursions are, how they are booked, and whether they are worth it. This Bolsover Cruise Club guide will cover everything you need to know to make the best decision for your holiday

What Are Shore Excursions?

At each port of call, cruise lines offer guests not only the opportunity to explore but also to enjoy exclusive activities and experiences. Known as shore excursions, these opportunities are often made available especially for guests, providing them with insights into the history, food and people that give each port its character.

Shore excursions are excellent because they allow guests to have truly exceptional experiences throughout their cruise. Excursions lead directly to the sites and activities that make each port unique, and their exclusivity provides a quality of luxury and prestige to each cruise.

What Shore Excursions Are Available?

Shore excursions are not limited to any particular activity or event; they can truly encompass a variety of different experiences. Being so ingrained in the culture and history of a particular destination, shore excursions are entirely unique throughout the world, offering guests something new every time.

Shore excursions can include, but are not limited to:

  • City tours
  • Wildlife encounters
  • Hikes and walking trails
  • Aquatic sports and activities
  • Cooking classes
  • Wine tastings

Where to Book Shore Excursions

Guests can book shore excursions prior to their departure by logging into their booking using their booking reference on the cruise operator’s website.  This feature lets you browse the excursions offered throughout your itinerary, read descriptions of each, and book those that look fun.

All you will need to log in and book your excursion is the lead passenger’s name, booking reference and date of birth. You will be required to pay at the time of booking, and your tickets will be waiting for you in your cabin upon arrival. If you require any assistance in booking your shore excursions, get in touch, and our expert team will be happy to help.

Can Shore Excursions Be Booked On Board?

Whether you forgot to book or have changed your mind at the last minute, you can make shore excursion bookings at the Shore Excursion Desk once on board. Most cruise ships have at least one shore excursion specialist on board who can provide further information on pricing and recommendations for each port of call.

Once you’ve decided on your chosen excursion and made your booking, the cost will be added to your on board account, after which you will be issued your tickets.

Are Shore Excursions Cheaper on the Ship?

While there can be variation between cruise lines, shore excursions do not tend to be cheaper when booked on board.

At Bolsover Cruise Club, we always advise that you book your shore excursions as early as possible, particularly if there is something you really want to do in port. Certain excursions are extremely popular and may sell out, so it is important to book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Are Shore Excursions Worth It?

Determining whether a particular shore excursion is “worth it” is very subjective, as each guest will place a different amount of value on a particular activity or event. History buffs might revel in the chance to explore the ruins of Rome on a guided tour, whereas wine connoisseurs might place greater value on a private vineyard experience.

Alternatively, some guests may prefer to explore each port independently, discovering activities on their own. This approach to cruising can offer incredible experiences, so it’s up to each individual to make their own choice. At Bolsover Cruise Club, we recommend shore excursions to those who want a convenient, guided and exclusive experience that covers the very best that each destination has to offer.

Shore excursions offer several advantages over independent travel, including reputable quality, safety and the convenience of having a trip planned for you. A key benefit we also highlight is the guarantee that guests will return to their cruise ship in time for departure. Independent exploration requires guests to manage their own time, as cruise ships must stick to their departure time and cannot wait.

Shore Excursions – Frequently Asked Questions

Are Shore Excursions Accessible?

Cruise lines typically make arrangements to ensure those with disabilities or limited mobility can enjoy shore excursions to the fullest. This might include offering vehicle drop-offs, selecting step-free routes and providing personal guides to aid guests throughout the day.

Do I Need to Take Money on My Shore Excursion?

Some shore excursions may include a visit to local markets, craft shops, gift shops or restaurants, so it’s always worth taking some money in case you want to purchase a souvenir or enjoy a meal.

Are Shore Excursions Ever Included?

Yes, some cruise lines include shore excursions in their base fare. For example, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ ultra-inclusive cruising philosophy includes excursions in the fee guests pay up front. These excursions may still be subject to limited availability, so we recommend booking as soon as possible.
