Other cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line, now offer flexible dining options too, but NCL has made the concept central to its overall cruise experience.

Then there’s the entertainment. Depending on your ship, you could find everything from large-scale shows and live music to water attractions and racetracks. The newer Prima generation also introduced Ocean Boulevard, bringing more restaurants, bars and outdoor spaces closer to the sea.

For something more exclusive, The Haven by Norwegian combines suites with private facilities and enhanced service on many ships. Caribbean cruises may also visit Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas.

The downside is that not everything is included. Speciality dining, drinks, spa treatments, shore excursions and selected attractions can all increase the cost of your holiday. NCL’s Free at Sea offering can add benefits such as drinks, speciality dining, Wi-Fi, and shore excursion credit, but additional gratuities and charges can still apply.

NCL is particularly well suited to travellers who value choice over routine. Families and groups benefit from flexible dining, solo travellers have an unusually broad choice of dedicated accommodation, and food lovers can explore numerous restaurants if they’re happy to budget for speciality dining.

The newer ships also suit travellers who see the ship itself as an important part of the holiday.

If you prefer traditional set dining, regular formal evenings or a quieter cruise experience, another cruise line may suit you better. Likewise, if you want almost everything included in your fare, it’s important to compare NCL’s packages and potential extras carefully.

How Many Ships Does Norwegian Cruise Line Have?

Norwegian Cruise Line currently has 21 ships, ranging from smaller, established favourites to its latest generation of resort-style ships.

At the newer end of the fleet are Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva, followed by the larger Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.
